Hiya Helen!

Love your words! Love eating in front of the telly!

We've been loving Dept. Q, a fantastic and clever Scottish crime drama on Netflix. Have you seen it? 🩵 Nell

Working out what to eat every day is the worst. I admire the people who make meal plans and stick to them but it could never be me. Every day I seem to forget what I enjoy eating and nothing in the house is ever right. I have two children with very limited diets as well due to various sensory issues so that adds to the fun. I enjoyed last one laughing and have been working my way through taskmaster but haven’t watched much else on tv recently.

Haha I think it’s pretty normal (I’m aware that’s a current favourite word 😂)

I am delighted to hear Uncanny is back! I much prefer it on the radio. Last series they did a story about a house and went back to visit it but could only get as close as to look at it from ACROSS A FIELD!? I was shouting at the telly. As soon as the clocks change I read lots of traditional ghost stories, there is something oddly comforting in their familiar formula, I've always loved them (part of my freak flag!). I don't find ghost stories work as well onscreen either, but there was a BBC production of The Mezzotint (M r James maybe?) as one of their Ghost Stories at Christmas, and that was pleasingly creepy. It's a good story anyway but they got it just right. Worth a watch if you can find it, maybe when then evenings draw in again.

Oh yes, those BBC Christmas ghost stories are brilliant, Mezzotint being the best! I have watched it every Christmas since it came out. And found some old Christmas ghost stories on YouTube, made in the 1970’s. Some of them are terrible, but there is one called The Signalman that is fantastic! Well worth a watch! Best watched on a dark winter night though, I agree.

I was at a party last night and there was a 2 year old and by way of wanting to know everyone’s name we were sitting about on garden chairs so she moved round the little group pointing her finger to our chest and saying “who are you?”

I just love idea of approaching people at a party this way😂 instant existential crisis.

she then asked me “what’s this?” Pointing at my nail vanish (bail banish) earrings (not even gonna try that one) and lipstick (lipsink) … the 3 things you think I’m going to a party so I’ll do them and are instantly noticed as extras by this small person. They really know how to cut to the chase!

I watched sixth commandment on iplayer - unsettling but so well done. Not one to pair with an evening you don’t know what to cook!

This is my fall back maybe the day after a frozen chips scenario to convince myself I can actually cook: (picture doesn’t make it look tasty but it is!)

Oh the honestly of children! Charming and cutting in equal measures!

Thanks for the recipe link. Nigel Slater is the best for easy comfort food.

Oh wow! Your friends Louise and Alan have those wonderful 70s Bakelite handled knives - instant childhood flashback!

Egg and chips for dinner has to be eaten in a greasy spoon with a big mug of tea, it just doesn’t work with frozen chips!!

I can’t stop thinking about the “is it normal” question and whether to have a public rant or keep my mouth shut (brief answer: yes, in some illo areas, it’s normal)

Enjoy the circus 🤡 and tiny tub of ice cream! xx

Agreed, a greasy spoon egg and chips is heavenly, but not the same made at home with frozen chips. The circus and the tiny ice cream lived 100% up to expectation.

My telly tip is ’Days of the Bagnold Summer’ (on Prime) - the film is based on the graphic novel by Joff Winterheart and it’s SO good and very very touching in a beautifully low key way. It’s about a dull summer for a 15 year old and his librarian single mum. With Belle and Sebastian soundtrack. Solid gold!!

That sounds good, especially as I used to work in a library - and love Belle and Sebastian.

Thanks for the podcast recommendation. I always love what you recommend. The Blindboy Podcast is such a favourite now and still need to listen to Harry Hill’s funny noise podcast… Love Uncanny - and agree on radio is so much better…

I’m always having the ‘what do I even EAT’ convo with myself and end up doing something with an old pack of noodles and some pickle or something similarly ill-advised. I actually wrote myself a simple menu for these times a while ago and determined to keep all the ingredients in house all the time. And then failed to keep the ingredients in… No story arc here. No solution. The end. Sorry! 😂

I’ve been revisiting Wolf Hall on TV after just absolutely bingeing Bad Sisters, both good. Bad Sisters was SUPER compelling. I miss it now it’s over!

A pack of noodles is an excellent idea, I must get some and stash them away for lazy days.

I have never watched Bad Sisters, I will add that to my telly list, ta!

Ooh why do they put Uncanny on at 11.00 at night just as I’m about to fall asleep - it’s sooo scary!! Last night I turned on radio 4extra and they were reading Jaws- more terrifying than the film!! Our creative imaginations are too good! 😅
