Right now I am in London, probably eating ice cream with a tiny plastic spoon from a stripy tub while acrobats swoop about overhead. I probably have some Giffords Circus merch on my knee: maybe a tea towel, maybe a mug, who knows what delights there are this year!
I wrote this before I went 🎪 🤡
Actually it’s Sunday morning, so me at the circus was last night.
Consider this a Sunday Buffet: a bit of everything, maybe some nice leftovers, definitely a sausage, all bunged together on a coffee table in front of the telly

This week’s kitchen playlist
This week’s kitchen playlist revolved around two beautiful folk songs I heard on one of my favourite podcasts, As the Season Turns. They are specially recorded for the podcast and I haven’t been able to find them anywhere else. So here are the links to the podcast:
Sam Lee sings the midsummer hymn, ‘Abroad For Pleasure’ at 3 mins 55 seconds
Sam Lee sings ‘The Cuckoo’ at 25 mins 50 seconds
Be ready for tears. Sad ones and happy ones.
In case you missed it
This week I chatted with an illustrator who is going through tough times with her publisher. She feels micromanaged and manipulated, even bullied at times, but doesn’t know whether to trust her gut. Her agent is telling her that this is all normal.
Basically she was asking me, ‘Is this normal?’
Afterwards I did a quick chat to camera about what’s normal/ acceptable in the world of making picture books. If you missed it you can join the chat here:
Egg and Chips
One day this week we couldn’t decide what to eat. We couldn’t even remember what we EVER eat. Not even a vague recollection. We knew that even if we went to the shop we would still be no wiser. So after an hour or so moping about, we found some eggs, some frozen chips and some peas. Maybe you think we ended up enjoying dinner because of, you know, story arcs? But no.
Do you get days like that?
YouTube, Podcasts and Telly picks
Have you seen Conclave? I loved it.
I binged Last One Laughing in one evening a couple of weeks back, if you like Bob Mortimer you will love it.
Uncanny is back! I didn’t enjoy it on the telly, I think I found Danny’s hair too distracting, but as a podcast I am still in. Ghost stories are always best told with words I think, it leaves room for your brain to fill in the images.
After having psychotherapy for many years, I love hearing psychotherapists discuss their practice. My favourite podcast at the moment is Psychology in Seattle. I have even joined their Patreon so I don’t miss anything they do.
This conversation used to happen
When Pie was a toddler she always wanted me to accompany her to the toilet. We had some pretty good chats in those moments. But there was one chat we had over and over again. It went:
Pie, ‘Why are some people big and some people small?’
Me, ‘I don’t know.’
What are your podcast/ telly picks? What interesting conversations are you/ did you have with your toddler? What’s on your playlist? Do you ever forget what you like to eat?
See you at the next buffet selection.

Hiya Helen!
Love your words! Love eating in front of the telly!
We've been loving Dept. Q, a fantastic and clever Scottish crime drama on Netflix. Have you seen it? 🩵 Nell
Working out what to eat every day is the worst. I admire the people who make meal plans and stick to them but it could never be me. Every day I seem to forget what I enjoy eating and nothing in the house is ever right. I have two children with very limited diets as well due to various sensory issues so that adds to the fun. I enjoyed last one laughing and have been working my way through taskmaster but haven’t watched much else on tv recently.
