Hi, I wouldn't be without my sailor fude pen - it is angled at the end to vary line weight. Sailor ink brilliant as well!

Have you got the 40 or 55 degrees?

Yes, which one? I am curious 🧐

I got myself a Sailor Fude! I can’t wait to try it out!

Yes it looks similar to mine but mine seems to be a fatter pen with no writing on the side. This one is really good too, same scratchy variability. I posted some tests I did on my IG grid on March 15: https://cultpens.com/products/sailor-profit-fude-de-mannen-calligraphy-fountain-pen

I had a nosy at the pen drawings on your feed, gorgeous as always! I ordered myself a Sailor Fude 🥳

That's one option, but they also make a 55 degree one, with even greater line variation:

I bought one recently after seeing sketchbooks from @koosjekoene and @artlyfestyle on IG:

Haven't used it yet but it looks like fun!

I’ve got a lovely green Sailor fude de Mannon fountain pen that I can fill with waterproof ink and it has a great thin/fat scratchy line. Very cheap- under a tenner I think. I love it.

And another Japanese pen - a Platinum fine pen that takes carbon ink. (It looks a bit like the long pointy fountain pens that went into stands). A smooth and consistent line. Cost about £20 a few years ago from Choosing Keeping in London. Unfortunately I think they’re discontinued.

I love my “little fat man” fountain pen. It’s like it was made for my hand! So comfy to draw with, easy to refill and nice line variety. I think I found it when searching “fude pen” on Amazon a while back.

That’s him! I just posted about this pen yesterday in my chat if you wanna have a look. I got the bent nib and clear body. He’s so very short and handsome. ❤️✒️

Do I have to buy special ink for it? Or can I fill it with any ink?

Expand full comment
Beth Spencer's avatar

It seems that fountain ink is best to keep it from getting clogged. I originally used this sepia off-brand fountain ink, which was too watery for my liking. I found a bottle of Higgins fountain ink for $6.99 at the art supply shop and it’s been delightful.

I'm not much of a pen user, but I do like bringing out my Pilot G-Tec C4 every so often; it feels quite intuitive to sketch with because of its fine point! I'd love to get some sort of fountain pen with a flexible nib though so I can vary line weight easily - fineliners feel to consistent, but brush pens feel like they vary weight too much!

Helen Stephens's avatar

Yes fine liners are too consistent, agreed! I had never really had a brush pen that I’ve loved, not yet anyway.

Another Sailor fude fan over here! I recently fell in love with it, after being bamboozled by it for a few weeks. So good to take out in the wild because you don’t need to carry an ink pot and you can vary the line depending on how you hold it. I use a clunky dip pen to work at home. The Sailor fude wouldn’t replace my dip pen but it’s a lovely outdoor compromise

Haha! I’ve got a delivery of blue-black and red ink cartridges ordered as I’m excited to try drawing in different colours without carting a drawful of ink around! You can get a converter too to fill from bottled ink but I’m taking it slow with this new pen love!

Oh what a treat, all the colours!

And I love the fact that it can take waterproof ink. I often draw over ink washes and liquid charcoal washes with these sailor fountain pens. But I do sometimes use a Pentel brush pen filled with a permanent sepia ink cartridge.

Helen Stephens's avatar

They take waterproof ink! I had no idea you could get a cartridge pen that takes waterproof ink! It’s part of the reason I love a dip pen, I love Higgins Black Magic waterproof ink. I like to be able to paint over the top of the line sometimes. This chat is absolute gold dust! Thank you.

And I hate supporting Amazon so I order all my pen stuff from Cult Pens. Really quick delivery - even to Iceland. They’re probably owned by Amazon....

Yes both the Sailor ink in waterproof cartridges (or with a converter and my favorite Platinum Carbon ink) and the Pentel brush pens also come with waterproof cartridges.

My favorite pen is a dip pen, too! - I use a Koh-i-noor holder with a Brause Blue Pumpkin nib (great thicks and thins, plus it performs beautifully in any direction - no skips or drags). But if I'm drawing outside the studio, it's a 005 Micron in black - love how tiny the mark is and I don't need to lay down any pencil first because I can make sketchy, faint marks that I overlay with a more sure line as I work. Can't wait to learn what others like! :-D

Expand full comment
Helen Stephens's avatar

I haven’t come across any of these, that 005 Micron sounds interesting, if you press down do you get a darker line?

Expand full comment
Susannah Fisher's avatar

Yes, but the 005 Micron is a monoliner so I think the pressure is just more of the tiny point on the paper rather than tines splitting like with a dip pen.

I love the Kuretake No. 40 fountain brush pen. It is lovely to draw with and uses ink cartridges. I’m also a big fan of dip pens. I’ve started using ink cages which magically hold a lot of ink so I can draw a lot longer than with average nibs before re-dipping. The ink cages are a game changer!!

eBay is a good place to look for vintage or different options of Fude (bent nib) fountain pens too. Usually for very good prices. I love my Fude pens so much. What a great conversation about pens! I refill my Fude pen cartridge with a syringe- that’s super easy to do.

Hi, usually I don't use pens. If I have no idea what to draw I start with a wet watercolor pencil with some mark making. When I find a subject or a theme I will keep playing with bamboo pen and watercolour.

What a great collection of favorite pens!

My favorite pen is about 4 of those, since I always keep at least three pens on the desk beside my desk and I use them all on any drawing.

I have a fat chinese pen with a huge bent nib... which allows super wide expressive stronkes.

Also the Pentel Brush Pen is great and so are various other nibs.

But what is a pen without a perfect paper to draw on?

My favorite is Arches CP that really brings out the texture in a line.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Linked is a picture of all my drawing tools at work:

Mine is Pilot G Tec C4 because of its ink-flow but when drawing in combination with watercolours I use Tachikawa's Maru nib pens and waterproof ink. I wish the Pilot's pen was waterproof tho!
