I went through two pairs of identical black ballet flats as a child. I would wear them until they were falling apart and my parents forced me to get rid of them. Then I would conduct a private funeral service for the worn out pair, explaining to them that they were very good shoes and did not deserve the injustice of being put in the trash. *sigh* They really were very good shoes. I've of course continued my devotion through a variety of iterations in adulthood (more ballet flats and in the past few years black leather barefoot shoes) with no parental figures in a position to force our parting.
I had a Norwegian jumper with matching hat when I was little, and my sister had one too… instead of buttons it had little hooks like Viking ships and I loved it so much. I always wanted a grown up size one - and the I found one in Oxfam!! Not matching hat sadly. SO glad you enjoyed comics class - and count me in for that artists’ retirement village, I’m ready! ❤️
I wanted to be a nun for a while when I was little, my mum thinks it was a combination of liking the smell of incense at my cousin’s confirmation and watching The Sound of Music too many times 😂
Ha! They sound like good enough reasons to me 😂 The Sound of Music is probably the number one recruiting method for nuns! My partner was given a form to fill in at school and asked if he wanted to:
1. Help at the school fete 2. Donate some money to the church 3. Become a priest.
He ticked 3 because he thought that was the most generous. We are still waiting for the knock at the door, one day they will turn up wagging that form in his face!
My family would call me Nora Batty as a kid in primary school with my wrinkly school tights and remember thinking this was not an insult 😁
I also had these Mary Jane’s at a similar age that were white with red ladybirds 🐞 dotted over them and my gran using tip-ex when I went to stay with her to mask the scuff marks at the toe! After the summer holidays back at school I saw a teacher using it on paper I informed her “that’s just for shoes!” Not sure who was more incredulous at that moment!
I don’t know if this goes for other families but I feel like when we looked at photo albums of holidays one of things always remembered was loved articles of clothing lost on that day! One ladybird shoe fell victim to a picturesque lay by in the Isle of Wight!
I know right!? I’ve just moved house and it backs on to a primary school and now the snatches of conversation I hear on the way to the bus stop are so funny!
Discovered Bella Freuds podcast this week and I am obsessed! Haven’t listened to the one with Kristen Scott Thomas yet, but it will be the next one for sure :)
My uniform since early teens (half a century ago!😬) has been jeans, trainers and a jumper. How happy am I that trainers are finally favoured over heels.?🙌🏻
Jane’s comics course is fantastic!! Careful with that piano! 😆
I went to a convent primary school and there was quite a range of nun fashion - from full head to toe black and white outfits all the way to sensible dark blue skirt and cardigan combos!
Yes please to the retirement village! I’ll still be wearing dungarees and hand-me-down jumpers with holes in the sleeves! And, of course, velour for parties!
I love toggle buttons on a jacket, but also vintage buttons on a skirt or near the hem of a linen shirt. I have my grandma’s button tin (it’s lovely).
Also, I grew up wearing flannel nighties and haven’t had one for about 30 years now, I asked for one for Christmas — it’s green and navy plaid and I LOVE IT!!!! My husband ordered me a second one because I was so smitten with it.
Jane's comics class is such a treat! I want to do it again! The thing that I always love is a good, old ratty t-shirt. I remember my dad had this old shirt that was so worn out and soft. Every time he wore it we'd find a new hole in it haha. He had plenty of good shirts, but couldn't resist that old softie.
I think you may have to tie that man to an immovable object ( a piano perhaps?) to restrain him from serious injury.
And yes. Can you tell? An all girl’s convent school. Massive grit in the oyster. Not sure if it made me gob out a pearl but it certainly helped me with a lifetime’s supply of material to write about. Or around. Or despite….
Blue jumpsuit with a zip. I had one my mum made me as a kid, and last year I made one for big me, same colour and style! I love it, even if I do look a bit like a tellytubbie.
Oh wow, I want one of those! Like the art school/ tradesman blue boiler suits but with a zip? Our chimney sweep, Susan, wears one and looks incredible.
I used to wear blue stripey Dickies dungarees v at college, just remembered! The ones I made last year has short sleeves, bought I've just bought a long sleeved overalls version from charity shop which I'm going to dye... prob blue!!! 🤣 💙
I like the occasional patterned dress/skirt but as I'm getting older I'm favouring comfort and warmth so my current fashion icon is Claudia Winkleman on Traitors! 😆
YESSssss 😂 FINALLY a nun person. My fave nun-of-fashion is Maria in the start of The Sound of Music - (before she gets made to make more clothes for herself). The sensible smocky-pinafore vibes of her first outfits get me every time. Also a big fan (since forever) of the slightly fusty woollen, corduroy and muted twill type fabrics of the Alan Bennet aesthetic.
Ps just started ‘Fly Your Freak Flag’ yesterday. Already absolutely loving the first task.
Is footwear included? For me it’s a pair of old boots. Started as a horsey teenager and continued through art college with a trusty pair of DM’s, especially in the hot shop (glass with ceramics student) that I had for 10 years. Then an old pair of walking boots in my studio. Do some people really live without a pair of Old Boots?

I love it, shoe funerals! It is so sad when gorgeous shoes wear out.

Wow, that jumper was waiting for you to walk in! I LOVED the comic class, just what I needed. See you in the retirement village!

The tip-ex comment to your teacher - amazing! Teachers must hear some bonkers things!
I know right!? I’ve just moved house and it backs on to a primary school and now the snatches of conversation I hear on the way to the bus stop are so funny!

Isn't it brilliant? So good to hear chat about clothes that goes way deeper than what’s in fashion.
My uniform since early teens (half a century ago!😬) has been jeans, trainers and a jumper. How happy am I that trainers are finally favoured over heels.?🙌🏻
It was just a matter of time until the world caught up!
🤣🤣🤣

And yes Jane’s comic class is amazing! I have homework - and am looking for new stories all the time - I am hoping Gerry might move the piano again 😂
Oh let’s wear velour at our old people’s home parties! I can’t wait!

Oh flannel anything! So soft and warm!

Agree. Old soft t shirts are the best. Jane’s comic class is amazing, I have only done the first week, but am loving it!
Well NOW i'm in my Nora Batty era, who knew she was such a cottage core icon!
Me too, embrace the Nora!
Nuns? Shudder. Twitch. Grabs stiff gin even though it’s breakfast time.
Not for me.
But heroic menfolk doing their backs in? Very relatable. Well done for lip-zipping.
Waving atcha from up t’road x
Ha! Did you go to a convent school? I had very little knowledge of what nuns did so they looked like interesting mysteries to me 😂
Oh jeez, the piano needs to be moved back into the room again next week… part 2 coming soon.

I had a sailor dress as a teenager and always wish I could carry off a sailor dress now.
I wore a sailor dress for our formal at university, and it was my favourite too! Now I’d love a navy blue sailor blouse, with off-white piping!
I bet you could!! Perfect for good shippin
Well that was all the encouragement I needed, I will look for one. Hopefully a vintage number.
Also: blue. Blue is such a good colour, the colour of uniforms.
Oh nice! I love a stripe.
I like the occasional patterned dress/skirt but as I'm getting older I'm favouring comfort and warmth so my current fashion icon is Claudia Winkleman on Traitors! 😆
Oh Claudia is amazing, the capes and the gloves!
