Your own miniature village! You’re on the way to a hamlet already! I found an old Fisher Price dolls house in the attic a few weeks ago, previously bought at a car boot sale for… me I think. And forgotten about. It’s up on a shelf now for use as reference for my next cross section!
On #walktosee I honestly don’t think I’d be an illustrator now without it! It got me drawing daily when I was still at work, and I quickly became obsessed with drawing again after a big break from it after art school. So, thank you Helen!! 💛
I’m deep in artwork mode at the moment, but if I get my sketchbook out, I’ll try and remember this prompt (there are squirrels in there that make me forget things! It’s not my fault!!) Xx
Ahh man sorry about missing the miniature village but having one at home would be fun, maybe you could build one round the pond for the frogs to live in? I’ve not been getting out to do my #walktoseeonthemove but hopefully soon. My sketchbook is filling up with drawings of animals at the moment, not my favourite usually but something I’d like to improve.
I’ve signed up to get the replay for the illustrators atlas as sadly it clashes with my only income stream which is not at all related to illustration 😂
Sooooo glad you got the doll's house!! And thanks for the greyscale tip, just done it and it's a GAME CHANGER! Fingers crossed for some frogs for Gerry - Build It And They Will Come!
Gorgeous dolls house! Lol, number 2....you're in it now 🤣
#walktosee ... I'm unsure if I can share anywhere beside IG, as I'm not willing to make my account public atm, I don't think I can tag you? Is there any other way to show you? x
So sad about missing the miniatures! I stumbled across a miniature village a few weeks ago, it was an amazing combination of completely awful and quite wonderful. (If you're nosy, Google "Tiny Town Albertinia"... They even have very peculiar surfing ostrich sculptures.)
Woo just turned it to greyscale! It’s like an old newspaper 📰 I was listening to Caroline winklers ‘not for everyone’ podcast (don’t like it as much as her YouTube) but she just got a phone that is like a very snazzy “dumb” phone and she feels euphoric.
Anyway you’re both leading the way!
The new dolls house is excellent- that balcony- swoon!
I listened to that too! It was very inspiring. Hence the greyscale - I couldn’t wait long enough for a new dumb phone, thought I could make my iPhone dumb instead. Ha!
It was very convincing! her friend seemed sceptical but I was like yep you look extremely content!
Loved her telegram analogy. I’m reading a Muriel spark book a far cry from Kensington -set in 1950’s in a boarding house and there is lots of funny chat about who is one the phone to who in the communal hallway!
I love doll’s houses. I don’t have any. I suspect if I did, it would multiply until there was nowhere left to sit down. I haven’t grey scaled my phone but I did turn off the little red dots. That helps enormously. I know I spend too much time on insta and not enough actually drawing. I’m working on it. It’s hard when you’re a dopamine addict. I won’t use my phone in cafe’s or doctor’s surgeries or other places where I am required to wait. Instead of scrolling, I sit and look at all the other people, who are invariably looking at their phones. Today I sketched some little imaginary people while I waited. I was so absorbed I nearly jumped out of my skin when they called my name.
Oooh the greyscale trick sounds like a good one! I recently got the Opal App (free version) and its absolutely slashed my screen time! So glad!!! Might try the greyscale too ...
Have you been to the dolls house museum underneath a garden centre just off the motorway north of Carlisle? I mean, garden centres are already wonderful places, but a tiny world underneath one was the MOST EXCITING discovery
Ahh, your dolls house #2 how sweet! A nice consolation prize I hope, and much more permanent. Sorry you were feeling so poorly. I loved today's post—thanks for the grayscale phone tip. My brain's been squirrelly (more than usual) since being on holiday in Ireland followed by a week of Covid :/ so I have high hopes this boring new phone will be the doorway to inner calm. The upside of forced downtime and house-bound-ness has been making a nice applesauce snack cake—a recipe I got from a type designer! Zuzana Licko of Emigre Type—and riding the "back to school" energy of early September to dream up some new offerings in the ol' illustration biz. The Goodship is wonderful company in all that—listened to the newest podcast while baking :) cheers from the USA

I love your walktosee drawings, I remember when you started joining in. It will be very exciting to have you back after your deadline!
Ahh, thanks Helen! 🥰

Ha! Yes go earn your income then watch the income atlas and find new incomes. Income. Income. 😂

I know, I am hooked! 🏠
I’m Shame, I won’t see your drawing if your account is private 😭
Maybe I could share on my substack and tag you?
Oh yes! Do that 😙✏️
Yay!! Thanks Helen! x

I just googled it: brilliantly bonkers!
That is EXACTLY what I am looking for! Awful and wonderful! That ticks all the boxes.

Just found this with instructions of how to set up a short cut- so you can toggle between greyscale and colour, for looking and taking photos
OH OH OH! I need that! Thank you 🤩
Yes! All my photos are going to look like gcse photograph otherwise!
I love the new dolls house! My childhood '70s one had the same tile-patterned paper on the roof, but in red.
I love the papers! The whole think is covered in brilliant printed paper!

I’ve turned my phone grey, it’s deeply weird but I’m sticking with it!!!
Stick with it! It is a surprisingly good phone deterrent!
Will do and thanks for the very creative solution to reducing screen time!
I am a complete convert to a black and white phone! It’s reduced my time on instagram by about 90 percent!! I can turn it on when I need it…perfect.

Thank you for reminding me about greyscale on the old phone. Absolutely need to do this immediately. I want my screen time down by 45% too!

I switched my phone to b&w after reading this and almost immediately I got a message.....it was Mr G sending me a photo of a rainbow......😆
What a fun read! Your pond update is still echoing in my head, and now I’m stealing the greyscale trick too. Such a clever reset—love this.
Curious though—if you visit a miniature village with a migraine, does it get smaller? Worth a shot…
