Kitchen units are coming on a treat! It’s going to look so blimmin’ good! We have the same old blue and white kitchen cupboard unit, imherited from my Scottish great aunt’s cottage. My sister’s the current custodian. It’s crazy to think it was a main kitchen workspace. My aunt’s kitchen was minuscule, so the flip down shelf on the cupboard and a tiny Formica-topped table were her only worktops. She still managed to bake pies n all sorts in about 4ft of space!

Your cupboard made my heart skip a beat! I think you’d enjoy our home’s giant old doorbell. It’s huge and still works! I’ll post a pic in chat!

We’ve found some very old ledgers in the attic, a bed frame and a “for sale” sign for when the house originally sold for $19k in the ‘60s.

Nothing quite makes an impression on one’s life as an old kitchen... that’s where most of the living goes on. My charming old kitchen dates from 1926 - and has one very odd and sensible feature - a foot long hole cut out of the side of the wall, which allows people inside the kitchen to look through to the front door. We luv it and cat really luvs it, since it’s a shortcut to her favorite hallway hangout.

We had one of those cabinets, but it had yellowy green doors instead of blue ones. I was home educated for a couple of years of primary and that was where my school books lived and the pull down bit was my desk, though I think I also often moved to the kitchen table because, as you say, it wasn't awfully stable!

Horse Gutter sounds like a fabulous address to have! I’m not sure if the history where we live now, but I grew up in a tiny village in the midlands called No Mans Heath, which used to be where the four counties of Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire met. The county borders have moved a little way since, but it used to be a convenient escape route for fugitives to escape from the law by crossing into a different county!

I love the kitchen tales. I also love the window into your home. It's not so different here in the states. I am not one who loves granite countertops. Good thing, our home was built in 1947. If we ever get new countertops I would go for butcher block. It matches our old house. As we have hit our 70's it does not appear that we will get a new kitchen. So, I painted it and love it. The bottom half of the cupboard are the most beautiful blue and the tops are white. All is well. A children's book I LOVE is called the Cottage at the End of the Lane. Another one is Christmas In Exeter Street. Both feature houses which I am intrigued with. I love a sweet read and my granddaughter loves them too.

We've just moved into a house with a '60s kitchen. Lovely yellow cabinets and blue formica tops. I was horrified at first but its actually growing on me!

My friend has the cabinet in her Hunstanton beach hut, it’s perfect for tea mugs and a tupperware box of biscuits .. nothing heavier for that fold-down shelf!

I LOVE old kitchens like that!! I sometimes look at the property websites because there are so many 1960’s flats/houses here with original kitchens/bathrooms… the tiles…. 😍 And that cabinet.. !!there’s one Ive had my eye on here at a coworking I go to which is a converted industrial carpenters workshop .. all the furniture there is for sale so basically you can buy the table you’re sat at.. my 70 year old bathroom sink came from there - they were using it as a plant pot!! The cabinet is duck egg blue with yellow Formica insets and beautiful handles … Every time I go in I check that it’s still there. It needs some TLC and I’m not sure how easy it would be to get replacement Formica but I love it…

That kitchen cabinet brings back memories. We had one of those when we first bought our house. We got a load of kitchen furniture from an older couple who were refurbishing. As you say, it wasn't terribly practical in a modern kitchen but I was still sad to see it go - ours was a cheery lime green.

Your new kitchen is going to look so cool! When we moved into our house (an old bungalow - very retro), the kitchen units were blue and they had New Kids on the Block stickers on the inside. We’ve extended our house now and are also in the process of building a new kitchen - exciting isn’t it.
