YAY! We closed our shop because life got crazy-busy (lock down happened, we built two new studios in the garden, launched The Good Ship, got a new roof, illustrated some books, you get the idea) but now life is settling back into a routine, and my girl Pie wants to help run the shop, so we’re open again!
And I made a set of 6 square postcards based on memories of my 1980's childhood.
• Top left is when my parents gave me free rein to choose the wallpaper for my bedroom and I went for all red hearts ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ and kitten posters. Spot the boom box, the beanbag (that the cat used as a litter tray, so it stank but I wouldn't part with it REALLY!) the snoopy toy and the walkman (playing the Miss Marple theme tune that I recorded off the telly).
• Top middle is a memory of collecting eggs for breakfast from a neighbour's hen coop.
• Top right is me and my siblings watching a hooky copy of E.T. that my Dad brought home from work in a carrier bag on many, many VHS cassettes. I was in charge of putting them in the video recorder in the right order.
• Bottom left is me floating above my bed, and since posting this illustration on Instagram I realise floating or flying as a child is a very common memory.
• Bottom middle is me and my pals messing about on the hay bales at harvest time.
• Bottom right is a recurring dream I had of wolves floating up to the window.
I did them all for #childhoodillustrated a hashtag I started on Insta for drawings of memorable moments from our childhoods. I made a film all about how to join in if you fancy showing us your childhood memories.
Bye for now, Helenx
Wonderful memories captured so charmingly Helen, very inspiring.
What a lovely way to capture memories! I spent a lot of time in my grandmas kitchen, I’ve always been sad I had no pictures of this time. You’ve inspired me to draw these memories!
